Our dogs are so much more than just pets: they’re teachers, friends and constant reminders of the joy and beauty in life. My dog, Mack, who’s been by my side for many years, has taught me a plethora of lessons. He’s not the friendliest pup on the block, but his loyalty, protectiveness and spirit, even while being unwell, are truly inspiring.
Here are ten things I’ve learned from him:
- Always take a moment for your loved ones
When I come home, Mack is always there, tail wagging, full of excitement. His simple joy at seeing me is a reminder to show the people in my life how much you care. It’s easy to get caught up in our own world, but a warm greeting says, “I’m happy you are part of my life,” which is something we all need to hear. - Stay cool in the heat
Mack loves being outside but knows when to stick to the shade or take a break to breathe and sip some water. He follows his instincts. Remember to take care of ourselves especially on those days in which things are heated up (by temperature or a discussion). Pausing to refresh can make all the difference. - Stretch it out
Whenever a dog gets up, he stretches out in the most satisfying, deliberate way. It’s a simple act, but it’s one that keeps him limber and ready to play. I’ve started following his lead, using small stretches throughout the day to ease tension and keep me grounded. - Remember to play
Even at ten years old, Mack loves playing hide-and-seek, catch or just running with me. Watching him brings me back to my own childhood – that feeling of play for play’s sake, with no agenda. In a world that rewards always being in a hurry, it’s easy to overlook how refreshing it is to simply play, laugh and have fun.

- Never waste a chance to walk
Mack’s eyes light up every time I grab the leash, whether it’s a quick trip to the mailbox or a long walk around the neighbourhood. His enthusiasm reminds me to appreciate every opportunity to move, breathe and enjoy nature. Walking doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming – it’s the small, mindful strolls that can really make our day. - Slow down
Dogs have a unique talent for taking things slow and staying present, especially on our walks where every leaf and blade of grass gets his full attention. Watching him tune into each moment is a reminder to slow down, too. Life feels more meaningful when we take a beat to absorb the details, appreciate what’s around us and let go of that rush to the next task. - Always be grateful
There is something special about the way Mack looks at me. Even when he’s feeling unwell, he’s there, appreciative and content. It hints me to pause and acknowledge what I’m grateful for, to feel the comfort and joy that come from simply being present with those we love. - Stay young at heart
Mack may be ten, but he’s forever a puppy at heart. His willingness to embrace his playful, gentle side keeps him vibrant, even in tough times. This spirit reminds me to never let age or expectations dampen my sense of wonder and to keep that “puppy heart” alive by finding joy in the little things.

- Trust your instincts
Mack’s a bit wary of strangers – but he’s never unkind with his friends. He’s a dog who follows his instincts but is also open to kindness. Watching him has taught me to follow my own intuition, to trust it and to act in ways that feel right for me, without compromising compassion. - Don’t bite when a growl will do
Mack isn’t a biter, but he’s protective when it matters, especially of those he cares about. He’s shown me that sometimes a gentle boundary, a “growl”, can get the message across just as effectively without escalating things unnecessarily. And often, setting boundaries calmly is the most loving thing we can do for ourselves and others.
Mack’s has reminded me that the most impactful life lessons come from the simplest actions, and it’s in those small, everyday moments we find true wisdom. Here’s to our four-legged friends – the teachers, protectors and joyful souls who show us how to live life a little better.
